WELCOME TO YEAR 5

Welcome to Year 5!

We hope you have had a summer full of adventures and made plenty of long lasting memories so you are now feeling rejuvenated and ready to learn.

 

Our first topic this year is 'UK and USA'. Keep an eye out on here and via our twitter page for regular updates and plenty of photos of our learning as it happens!

Great Malvern Primary School

 

Dear Parents,

 

Welcome back to Great Malvern for the autumn term. We are looking forward to having a really productive term; Year Fives have come back enthusiastically and are keen to learn.

 

We thought it would be helpful to give you an idea of what your child will be learning in school. Please find below, a summary of the learning Year Five will be covering this term.

Areas of learning

 

Maths

Place value (focus on numbers to one million), addition and subtraction (mental and written methods) multiplication and division, perimeter and area and statistics.

English

Book studies “There’s A Boy In The Girls’ Bathroom” and “The Jamie Drake Equation”, poetry festival, and author study - Robin Stevens.

Science

Forces and Space.

Topic

The United States of America – we shall be studying its history, geography and culture.

Computing

Being safe online.

PE

Netball and dance

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Year 5 Additional Information

PE kit

Your child will have a P.E. lesson on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Homework

Reading

Please make sure reading books and reading records are in school every day and that your child reads at home too, it is important that you and your child write in the reading record whenever they read – please encourage your child’s comments to refer to what they have read e.g. “I liked it when Frank found out that he had won the prize.”

Spelling

Words will be set on a Friday and tested the following Friday. Please support your child in learning the spellings they bring home.

Maths

This will be sent home weekly on a Friday, to be handed in before the following Friday, and will be based on the work they have completed in class. 

English

This will be sent home weekly on a Friday, to be handed in before the following Friday.

Special Events

Friday 20th September – Come and see your child’s reading lesson – Reading Open Afternoon

Week beginning 30 September – Great Malvern Primary Poetry Festival – special guest poet in school

Thursday 3rd October – Year 5 and 6 to see author Robin Stevens in Malvern

Tuesday 8th October and Thursday 10th – Parents’ Evenings

Monday 14th October – Internet Safety afternoon

Friday 25th October – Finish for half term

TOP TIP!
Your child has recently received a 'Global password'. Every child in education in Worcestershire has one so that they can access the 'Worcestershire Learning Gateway'. This gateway allows your child to have free access to many programmes including; Education City, Purple mash and Espresso Learning. Please take advantage of these great resources with your child as they are great learning resources to be enjoyed at school and home.
